Artists’ Book Collection Dundee (abcD)
abcD is a unique collection of artists’ books developed by Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and managed by the University of Dundee Museum Services. The collection was established by distinguished publisher and artist Alec Finlay in 1999 and holds a collection of over 1,200 artists’ books and multiples created by both international artists and artists based in Scotland. Highlights from the collection include works by Christian Boltanski, Ulises Carrión, Helen Douglas, Alec Finlay, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Hamish Fulton, Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Hamilton, Susan Hillier, Sol Le Witt, Richard Long, Bruce McLean, Julian Opie, Toby Paterson, David Shrigley, Hans Waanders, Lawrence Weiner, Weproductions and more.

Collecting Policy: An acquisition scheme enables new items to be added to the collection regularly. One of our aims is also to publish our own titles.

Collecting Policy: We purchase a wide range of artists’ books in a variety of formats and styles that also includes works by current and former DJCAD staff and students.
Access Conditions: Available upon request to anyone with a genuine research interest. The majority of the collection is located in the DOJ Library Local Store, which library staff can retrieve for you upon request, or within the general shelving area – please check the library catalogue for the location and shelf mark. Please note access to the DJCAD building is controlled by a proximity card secure entry system. If you are a member of staff or a student at the University of Dundee you should present your ID or matriculation card to DJCAD Reception (Monday – Friday 9.00am – 4.45pm) on your first visit to have it registered on the system. All other visitors should report to Reception to request admittance; this includes those members of the library who are not UoD staff or students. Outwith Reception opening hours, visitors are advised to obtain a visitor pass from the Main Library, Smally’s Wynd, Dundee DD1 4HN.
