Glasgow School of Art
The Artists’ Books Collection numbers around 1,000 volumes and forms part of the Special Collections at Glasgow School of Art. Built up since the 1980s, the collection provides a comprehensive snapshot of book arts activities within the UK and internationally. Emphasis is placed on the purchase on small-press editions that, though of limited print runs, are inexpensive and intended for mass distribution. Expensive livres d’artistes are not acquired. The definition of an artists’ book is kept deliberately broad, and the collection therefore features many object-based works and multiples.A number of student-made books by GSA alumni feature, along with books by internationally recognised artists such as Olafur Eliasson, David Shrigley, Christian Boltanski, Ed Ruscha, Doug Aitken, and others. A collection of around 150 works from Ian Hamilton Finlay’s Wild Hawthorn Press are also held.
Extent of Collection: c.1000
